3.5 Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides

Steps for Solving Equations  1. Use Distributive Property  2. Combine like terms  3. Add or subtract to move variables to one side  4. Solve

Examples:   8 + 5x = 7x x -5x Subtract variables 8 = 2x Subtract constants 10 = 2x Divide to isolate variable = x

Example:  Step 1: Distributive 4 ( 2r - 8) = 1/7 ( 49r + 70 ) (4)(2r) + (4)(-8) = (1/7)(49r) + (1/7)(70) 8r = 7r + 10

Step 2: Add or subtract variables  8r r = 7r r r - 32 = 10

Step #3: Add constant from both sides  r = r = 42
