3.5 Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides
Steps for Solving Equations 1. Use Distributive Property 2. Combine like terms 3. Add or subtract to move variables to one side 4. Solve
Examples: 8 + 5x = 7x x -5x Subtract variables 8 = 2x Subtract constants 10 = 2x Divide to isolate variable = x
Example: Step 1: Distributive 4 ( 2r - 8) = 1/7 ( 49r + 70 ) (4)(2r) + (4)(-8) = (1/7)(49r) + (1/7)(70) 8r = 7r + 10
Step 2: Add or subtract variables 8r r = 7r r r - 32 = 10
Step #3: Add constant from both sides r = r = 42
