Equal Sign The “=” indicates that the values of two expressions are equal = 45

Background Sometimes it is important to find the missing value that makes two expressions equivalent. This is called “Solving the Equation” We can make transformations on both sides of the equation without changing their equivalence in order to get the variable by itself

Transformations to both sides of the equal sign

Transformations to both sides of the equal sign

We are going to use this information to help us solve our equations.

Lesson 1

Algebraic Equations Multiplication with Subtraction 2x – 4 = x=12 22 x=6

Algebraic Equations Multiplication with Addition 5x + 10 = x=70 55 x=14

Algebraic Equations Multiplication with Subtraction -3x – 4 = x= x=26

Algebraic Equations Division with Addition -2 =6 x=30 x5x5 (5)

Algebraic Equations Multiplication with Addition -2 x=6 x=18/2 = (HINT) Reciprocal

Algebraic Equations C.L.T x = x +6x + 20 = 80 ( ) 10x + 20 = x = 6

12 7x + 5x - 12 = 48 12x - 12 = x = 60 X = 5 Algebraic Equations
