Writing an article about the victims of the Depression Writing an opinion article for the victims of the Great Depression

HDT 1/25/16 Give one specific example of human suffering during the depression. How could the government help lessen the suffering?

Centers Pretend you are a journalist for Time Magazine during the Great Depression. Your latest assignment is to travel the country and speak to different groups of people that are being affected by the economic down turn. After you have interviewed the different groups of people you will write a news article that describes the hardships of the American public and discusses possible programs or plans that can help the people of America get back on their feet.

Step One Around the room there are pictures and quotes from the people from the Great Depression. Each station contains a picture and various quotes from different groups in American society. You will complete the worksheet using the information from the quotes and discuss the key issues affecting that group of people. You should have at least 2 issues and the effects of those 2 issues in your notes.

Step One You will be assigned a group Your group will receive a folder. Each folder contains a picture and various quotes from different groups in American society. You will complete the worksheet using the information from the quotes and discuss the key issues affecting that group of people. You should have at least 2 issues and the effects of those 2 issues in your notes.

Write specific details about each group. FamiliesLiving in tents Worried about feeding the kids Lack of schooling for kids Large group takes care of everyone's kids Shame about living in the tent- keep it a secret

Brainstorm time

Step Two I will assign you the groups of people that you will be writing about. Copy the chart on your paper that you will turn in and use it to brainstorm ideas to put in you essay. When you are thinking about programs that might help them, please refer to your vocabulary squares.

Chart Group OneIssues they faced Details about the issues and the effects of the issues on their lives Program Ideas that would improve their lives or help them

Share with someone who has the same topic as you the information you put in your chart.

Step Three No HDT let’s start the writing! Now that you have gathered the information you will write a 4 paragraph article that describes the following:

For the 2 groups you have been assigned Start your article off with a description of what you have been researching. Briefly introduce the types of people you investigated and the types of problems they were dealing with. Write a paragraph for each group of people and describe in detail the hardships these people had to face and how it effected their lives. (Write one paragraph per group) In your closing paragraph describe how you feel these people can be helped. Use your notes and text book to research the different programs and discuss which programs you think would help the people you were assigned and why these programs would help them. Write a total of 4 paragraphs

HDT 1/21/15 1. What issues is this family dealing with? 2. What evidence from the picture tells you this? 3. What programs might help this family? Write about 3 issues.

For the group you have been assigned Start your article off with a description of what you have been researching. Briefly introduce the types of people you investigated and the types of problems they were dealing with. Write a paragraph for the group of people and describe in detail the hardships these people had to face and how it effected their lives. Eight sentence paragraph. Use evidence from the folders. In your closing paragraph describe how you feel these people can be helped. Use your notes and homework to research the different programs and discuss which programs you think would help the people you were assigned and why these programs would help them. Write a total of 3 paragraphs

Middle paragraph example (th)Many women were left to face the depression without a male provider or relief. (CD)Many women were too intimidated to find relief in breadlines. (CM)Mostly men would go to the bread lines and it was seen as a disgrace for women to stand in line for help. (CM)Many women were forced to eat very little and suffered from hunger alone and with no help. (CD)Women were often told not to take jobs because the expectation was for women to be housewives and the men needed the work to support families. (CM)This would hurt women who were left alone with families to support or single women. (CM)Women were not included in many of the public works programs and the jobs were for men only. (Closing)Many women felt invisible and left to fight the depression alone without husbands to help or relief from the government.

Example of programs that could help women Food relief for women only Provide jobs that provide women with that were traditionally women and pay women higher wages than what they were getting at the time Housing for homeless women

Example Older or disabled persons- The program that would best provide help would be Social Security and Disability. These programs provide assistance to those who are no longer able to work due to age or a disability.
