Overview Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Mission Statement Representative Tasks Low-Fidelity Structure Scenarios Experimental Method Experimental Results Suggested UI Changes

Mission Statement Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Problem 30% of traffic congestion is from difficulties in parking 47,000 gallons wasted per year = 730 tons of CO2 Frustrating No advance information Solution Application that can inform drivers about parking availability Take guessing out of the equation To provide drivers with an efficient means to find parking, and consequently, relieve stress, reduce CO2 emissions, save time, and save money

Representative Tasks Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall Determining the system-wide availability Task 1: Determine parking availability at U Village 2.Finding a parking spot near a given destination Task 2: Find the “best” parking lot among the available choices and get directions 3.Saving a parking spot after they have found it Task 3: Locate button to “Save location”

Lo-fi Prototype Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Paper and Pencil Used cut-out iPhone template

Scenarios Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Task 1: Determine parking availability at U Village

Scenarios Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Task 1: Determine parking availability at U Village U Village

Scenarios Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Task 1: Determine parking availability at U Village

Scenarios Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Task 2: Find the “best” parking lot among the available choices and “get directions”

Scenarios Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Task 3: Locate button to “Save location”

Experimental Method Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Participants: - Friends of friends that had not been previously exposed to our project - All participants were drivers = target audience - Diversity: gender, driving experience, preferences, etc. Environment: Odegaard Undergraduate Library

Experimental Results Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Pearls: -All participants concluded “blue circle” = current location - All participants assumed car icon = parking garage/lots - All participants were able to “get directions” and “save location” Pitfalls: -Participants were confused what the color of the car icon represented (Full? Empty?) - Participants couldn’t find “Back” option

Suggested UI Changes Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 We learned some elements of our design were not as intuitive as we thought! Add a visible “back” button Add a legend to the map to explain garage colors Add pricing information to garage icon (ex. $$$) Start page = search function, input destination

Summary Linda Le|CSE 440 Fall 2008 Parking is a serious problem Participants liked the concept of ParkSmart Design challenges: - Garage icon clarification - “Back” button - additional info on map
