Writing a Hypothesis Introductory Lesson for 8 th Grade Science

What is a Hypothesis? an educated guess that answers the Scientific Question A specific prediction about the expected outcome Shows the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.

1. Does the color of the mouse determine how many the snake will eat? Begin with the Scientific Question (Problem #1)

Think about an outcome…? Does the color of the mouse determine how many the snake will eat? Gray White MoreLess

Pick a side & Write the prediction The snake will eat more gray mice than white.

Another Scientific Question (Problem Practice #7) Does the weight of the bowling ball affect the number of pins that will fall down?

Think about an outcome…? Does the weight of the bowling ball affect the number of pins that will fall down? lessmore MoreLess

Pick a side & Write the prediction The heavier the bowling ball, the more pins that will fall down.

One more Scientific Question: (Problem Practice #10) Does the size of a plant’s leaves affect the amount of water vapor that is released?

Think about an outcome…? Does the size of a plant’s leaves affect the amount of water vapor that is released? smallerlarger MoreLess

The bigger the leaf, the more water vapor that is released. Pick a side & Write the prediction
