Topic: Mapping the Stars PSSA: D/S8.D.3.1

Objective: TLW use star patterns and simple tools to locate objects in the night sky.

MI #1: Constellations Constellations are sections of the sky that contain recognizable star patterns. Constellations help organize the night sky because every star or galaxy is found within one of 88 constellations. The locations of constellations in the sky changes with seasons, however, their location in relation to each other does not change.

MI #2: Using an Astrolabe Zenith- this the imaginary point in sky directly above the observer (90°) Horizon – this is the line where Earth and sky meet (0°) Altitude – the object’s angle between the horizon and the zenith

MI #3: Path of Stars in the Night Sky The apparent motion of the stars across the night sky is due to the rotation of the Earth. Circumpolar stars are stars that can be seen year round (particularly at the poles). Circumpolar stars appear to revolve around Polaris (the North Star).

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding where constellations are located allows you to find stars and planets in the night sky.
