Independent Research & Intern Mentor G/T Research Program By: Shannon Farley

INTERN MENTOR

 Choose an area of interest  Find a Mentor (60% of students already know who they want to work with, but if you are not sure Mr. Eckert will help you out!)  Most students leave during 6 th period every day  1 credit = and average of 5 hours per week  Students MUST provide their own transportation

WORKING WITH YOUR MENTOR  In IM the student must also pick a topic to research throughout the year.  Their mentor also has them work on projects over the course of the school year.  For this final project they must present what they have done all year as well as writing a research paper.  Over the years students have worked with: Johns Hopkins, NASA, Elementary Schools, ect.

ALYSSA SUMMERS: SENIOR “I love my internship and the opportunities it provides for me for my future. My mentor has been really helpful in my research and I love learning new things!” How can people be better informed of the abused cases that are going on with horses around the country being neglected and abused?

Independent Research

INDEPENDENT RESEARCH  Develop a question!  Start your research!

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY  32 + annotated bibliography's over the course of the year

ADVISORS  In IR, an advisor is like a mentor.  Advisors could include doctors, authors, professors, ect.  They help with organizing your research  finding high level sources  contributing opinions  making edits on final product

Megan V: Senior  "the independent research program has taught me to be self sufficient. it helps you learn to organize yourself and use your time wisely. it also has opened my eyes to different types of research methods..."  "the GT credit looks great on your transcript, and colleges like to see you taking the extra effort in your classes..." JOEY C: Senior What causes out of body experiences? What are the strengths and weaknesses of American, Chinese, and European education systems?

FINAL PRODUCT 8-10 PAGE PAPER WORKS CITED PAGE DOCUMENTED DATA Also, throughout the year, you will make presentations like these to other students.

MY RESARCH: how does chronic illness effect young adults and academic performance?

SOURCES INCLUDE Medical Associations Medical Journals Government Associations

THINGS I HAVE LEANRED (so far)  All school systems in the state of MD MUST have a program in place for students who are absent from school due to a medical issue.  Teachers are more concerned about not knowing how to handle the student in class, than the problem of missing school.  There is not a clear way to define chronic illness yet.

MY ADVISORS  Pupil Personnel Worker, Heather Graham  Pupil Personnel worker, Rhonda Lennon

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED:  CONTACT MR. ECKERT IN ROOM 252  OR HIM AT

“Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought.”
