Early Life Born in Harding County, Kentucky on Feb. 12, 1809 Father could only spell his name, mother was illiterate Farmers Moved to Indiana in 1816 Mother died in 1818 (Milk Sick) Moved back to Kentucky a year later

Lincoln’s Personality Laid Back Disorganized Careless in Dress Indifferent to Social Niceties (small talk) Ambitious and Craved Knowledge Very Shrewd (Cabinet)

Public Life Successfully ran for State Legislature in 1834 Would go on to win three more consecutive times Successful Lawyer from Became a US Representative for one 2 year term (Whig) Lawyer until 1857, and was endorsed to run for Senate

Douglas and Lincoln Famous Debates for 1858 Senate Race All About Slavery Seven 3 hour debates around Illinois Douglas accused Lincoln of wanting “Negro Equality” Lincoln focused on keeping slavery where it was (Republican) Lost the Senate Race BUT SET UP HIS BID FOR THE PRESIDENCY!!!

Something to think about… Why do you think Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus? How was the Emancipation Proclamation a political move? Why do you think Lincoln did not want to bring the Confederate leaders to trial? How is fighting a Civil War different from a typical war?

President Lincoln’s Political Moves Suspends Habeas Corpus-1861 In all at least 15,000 civilians were detained and tried in Military Courts. Creates the Emancipation Proclamation-1862 Thirteenth Amendment – 1865 Abolished all forms of involuntary servitude Would not pursue Confederate Leaders after the war. Lax Reconstruction Plan

Emancipation Proclamation “…all persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free;”

Military Strategy UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER No concessions to the enemy Loved Ulysses S. Grant Defeat Rebel Armies, Not Gain Territory Main goal of President Lincoln. Many of his Generals did not agree with this strategy. Keep Europe Out Won key battles in Antietam and Gettysburg to make sure Britain and France did not recognize the CSA as a real nation.

Fun Facts Lincoln Logs are named after President Lincoln because of his upbringing in a log cabin. His colleagues called him the “Original Gorilla” behind his back because he was so ugly. He was clean shaven until he entered the office of the presidency. Recommended by a friend so it would improve his appearance Douglas mocked Lincoln for selling whiskey. Lincoln responded with “Yes, it is true that the first time I saw Judge Douglas I was selling whiskey by the drink. I was on the inside of the bar, and the judge on the outside; I busy selling, he busy buying.”
