9 Reefer Shipment of Apples : 1.First chilled apples export by refrigerated container from Afghanistan to India. 2.Apples reached with only 2% damage 3.Sales up to 1.5 $/kg Construction of cool rooms in Wardak: 1.Two local cool rooms constructed professionally, 8000 USD 2.Farmers stored 20 metric tons of apples in each cool rooms in The stored apples will be sold during off-season 4.Expected sales during the off-season will be for 2$ /kg, current sales price is 1.3 $ / kg

10 Improved method of apricots sulfur drying: 1. Request for this training by farmers and DAILs 2. Almost 800 farmers trained in Wardak & Logar Provinces 3.Traditional dried apricots sales locally &0.5kg 4.Sulfur dried apricot sales locally $1.5 $/kg Solar drier: 1.Educated 35 male farmers on solar drying methods 2.Educated 58 female farmers on improved raisin drying methods

13 Lessons learned and Challenges: 1.Limited availability of cold chain transport 2.Quality packaging to meet market expectations 3.Trade credit has to be expanded 4.Global GAP must be implemented for Europe Market 5.Product quality improvement programs must be expanded 6.Controlled atmosphere storage capacity must be increased 7.Security is major constraint Opportunities: 1.Funds available supporting the challenges ahead 2.High quantity of fruit production during season 3.Large domestic market requirement in off seasonal time 4.Afghan Trade offices for support of Afghan fruit export and Marketing 5.Familiarity of the Afghan merchants with the cold chain system
