Warm up 9/2/15 Can you figure out what the underlined words mean? The big yellow school gleek pulled to a stop at the corner. The driver opened the door, and I climbed up the steps to get on board. I walked down the narrow zupher looking for an empty seat. Then I saw my friend, Jack, waving to me from the last row. “Over here, Nate!” he yelled. I nodded and made my way toward him. I took my norjot filled with books and placed it under the seat. Then I plopped down beside him and enjoyed the ride to blat. gleek – norjot- zupher -blat -

Determining the meaning of unknown words

Don’t skip over words you don’t know (and don’t just guess)!!! There are 3 strategies you can use to determine the meaning of words that are unfamiliar to you: 1. Context Clues 2. Using Affixes (Prefixes, Suffixes, Root Words) 3. Dictionary Skills

Context Clues

You try! His constant questioning of my remarks made him a nuisance. What does the underlined word mean? What clues let you know this?

Using Affixes (Prefix, Suffix, Root Word) 0 Root word – forms the base of a new word Ex: In the word “lovely” the root word is “love” 0 Prefix – a group of letters placed before a root word that carries meaning Ex: trans- means “across”; transcontinental means across continents 0 Suffix – a group of letters placed after a root word that carries meaning Ex: -ness means the state or condition of; loneliness means the state of being lonely

You try! Julia had to write a bibliography for her research paper. biblio – relating to a book or books graph – writing y – characterized by What do you think the underlined word means?

Dictionary Skills 0 Guide Word - a word printed at the top of a page indicating the first or last word listed on that page 0 Part of speech – tells how that word is used in a sentence Ex: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, interjection, conjunction

You should only use the dictionary once you have tried the other strategies!
