GRADE 5, MODULE 1: UNIT 2, LESSON 4 Inferring About Characters Based on How They Respond to Challenges Learning Targets I can answer comprehension questions based on text from esperanza rising that I have read independently. I can identify situations in esperanza rising where a character’s human rights are challenged. I can make inferences from the text about the characters in esperanza rising. I can use context clues to help me determine the meaning of words in esperanza rising. I can write to explain my thinking about the characters in esperanza rising.

Review the First Learning Target Discuss the purpose of the comprehension quiz with your triad Complete Comprehension Quiz on chapter 4 Refer to Norms for Triad Talk anchor chart. Quiz is on page 8. Quiz should take 5 minutes. Collect to review/assess.

Today We Will Review Chapter 4 Review the events of chapter 4. What could you write on your evidence flag at the start of the chapter to tell what the chapter is mostly about? Where did Mama, Abuelita and Esperanza decide to go? This novel is challenging! We will be reading sections many times to help us understand the text. Your most important job while reading is to think! Return entrance and exit tickets from Lesson 3. Students should keep these to refer to later for writing.

Jigsaw Part 1 Review each learning target. In your triad, each student will be assigned a character – Mama, Abuelita, or Miguel. Complete the jigsaw task card about your character. Don’t forget to mark evidence with your evidence flags in the text. Share YOUR THOUGHTS WITH students from other triads who read about the same character. Each group will create an anchor chart, a character t-chart with Challenges on one side and Responses on the other. Use Inferring by Using Text Clues chart for help. Jigsaw Task cards are on page 9.

Jigsaw Part 2 Return to your original triad. Share about your character (each student should speak for 4 minutes) Take notes while your classmate is speaking. When you are done, discuss the following question as a triad - “How is Esperanza’s response to challenges like the response of the other characters? How is her response different?” Emphasize that the author is not telling the reader what the characters are like, she is showing the readers how the characters behave, so that the reader can infer what the character is like.

Summarize and Exit Ticket On an index card, compare and contrast Esperanza to the character you became an expert on today. “How is Esperanza’s response to challenges like the response of the other characters? How is her response different?” Use details from the text to support your answer. Reread the learning targets for today. Let’s add the challenges the characters face to our “Human Rights Challenges in Esperanza Rising” anchor chart.

Tonight’s Assignment GRADE 5, MODULE 1: UNIT 2, LESSON 4 Homework: Purpose for Reading, Chapter 5: “Las Guayabas/Gauvas” (pages 58–80) What is Esperanza’s journey to the United States like? As you read, think about this question. Use your evidence flags to mark specific passages in the text to discuss with your triad. You do not need to write out answers as part of your homework; just keep track of your thinking with your evidence flags.
