BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) PLANNING EFFORTS STATUS 1 Planning & Development Committee April 5, 2016

Background Northeast Area Transit Study II (NATE) provided potential BRT corridor between Brighton and Denver Northwest Area Mobility Study (NAMS) provided a potential framework for arterial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the Northwest Area Other entities (local jurisdictions and CDOT) have efforts underway that will create additional BRT opportunities Successful opening of Flatiron Flyer State legislation permitting bus-on-shoulder

NATE II Purpose included the analysis of BRT alternatives between Denver/Brighton Final report recommends further consideration of BRT on SH 2 Corridor Line would terminate along University of Colorado A Line at: –Colorado Blvd. Station, or –Central Park Station Staff completing final report

SH 119 Highest prioritized NAMS BRT corridor Staff developing scope of work for environmental clearance and preliminary engineering Expect to release RFP late spring Process expected to take approximately 2 years

Other Efforts SH 7 Corridor –Coalition let by Boulder County preparing feasibility analysis for corridor from Boulder to Brighton US 287 –Interest from coalition of Northwest-area stakeholders in advancing this corridor forward from Longmont to US 36 East Colfax –Denver/Aurora pursuing bus enhancements from downtown to I-225 (more detailed presentation to follow)

Speer/Leetsdale Corridor –Denver beginning bus enhancement study / environmental review for corridor I-25 North –CDOT to begin bus-on- shoulder study to address “reverse commute” on Downtown Express managed lanes –CDOT to open managed lanes extension from US 36 to 120 th Ave. –Next phase will extend from 120 th to C-470 Other Efforts (con’t)

Next Steps DRCOG awarded RTD $1 million in TIP grant funding for region-wide BRT study Study will provide high-level analysis of potential corridors which could benefit from BRT-type capital investments Study will provide prioritized list of candidate corridors for future RTD investments Expected to begin mid-2017
