Winter Break Data Collection Extended School Year

Extended School Year Defined Special education and related services provided to students with disabilities beyond the regular 180-day school year are called extended school year (ESY) services. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school districts must provide ESY services if the student requires those services in order to receive a free appropriate public education. School districts are not required to provide ESY services to all students with disabilities—only to those who require ESY services. Taken from the FLDOE Publication: What’s the IDEA behind Extended School Year Services for Students with Disabilities 2002

Extended School Year is NOT… child care respite intended to maximize educational opportunity or potential growth “one size fits all” based on specific area of disability, level of service, or type of placement a longer school day Take From FLDOE BEESS Publication: Extended School Year Services for Students With Disabilities: A Training Module for IEP Teams 2002

Criteria for Extended School Year ESY is provided one or more of the following conditions is present: regression/recoupment critical point of instruction emerging skills nature or severity of disability interfering behaviors rate of progress special circumstances (e.g., transition from school to work) * This presentation will focus on regression/recoupment

Regression & Recoupment Regression The most common reason why a student receives ESY services is because it is feared that the student will regress (or lose progress) in critical life skills during time off from school. Regression refers to a decline in knowledge and skills that can result from an interruption in education. Regression must be documented through data collection. Recoupment Recoupment is the amount of time it takes to regain the prior level of functioning.

Documentation of Regression / Recoupment IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVESAREADATA SOURCES MASTERY LEVEL BEFORE BREAK DATA Collection 1 Date: _________ DATA Collection 2 Date: _________ Number of days to recoup skills __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other:_______________ __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other: ______________ __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other: ______________

Relationship to IEP goals Data should be taken on select IEP goals/benchmarks Not all of the IEP goals/benchmarks need to be tracked Select between 1 and 5 goals that are the greatest area of need IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVESAREADATA SOURCES MASTERY LEVEL BEFORE BREAK DATA Collection 1 Date: _________ DATA Collection 2 Date: _________ Number of days to recoup skills __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other:_______________

Mastery Level Using your selected data collection method, identify the level of mastery before the break Examples: IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVESAREADATA SOURCES MASTERY LEVEL BEFORE BREAK DATA Collection 1 Date: _________ DATA Collection 2 Date: _________ Number of days to recoup skills __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other:_______________

Data Collection After the Winter Break Once the student returns from winter break, data should be collected on the same goal(s) using the same data collection method Collect data at least once (Data Collection 1) Mark the date and the level of mastery If the student has not demonstrated regression, end collection of data here IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVESAREADATA SOURCES MASTERY LEVEL BEFORE BREAK DATA Collection 1 Date: _________ DATA Collection 2 Date: _________ Number of days to recoup skills __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other:_______________

Data Collection After the Winter Break If the student has regression, data should be collected a second time on the same goal(s) using the same data collection method Collect data (Data Collection 2) Mark the date and the level of mastery IEP GOALS / OBJECTIVESAREADATA SOURCES MASTERY LEVEL BEFORE BREAK DATA Collection 1 Date: _________ DATA Collection 2 Date: _________ Number of days to recoup skills __ Curriculum & Learning __ Social / Emotional __ Communication __ Independent Functioning ___ Work Sample ___ Skill Checklist ___ ULS Data ___ Test score ___ Other:_______________

Final Notes on the Data Collection Process Artifacts of collected data should be maintained and submitted at the end of the school year Data should be collected in the same manner on the same goals before and after Spring Break too More information regarding ESY will follow!
