Moon Snails

Common Name - Lunatia heros is the scientific name for the moon snail -Their shell can reach 7 inches and they can grow up to a foot

Feeding -Such as Clams and Cockles -They kill their prey by suffocating them with their gigantic foot or drilling a hole in their shell using their radula

-Northern Moon snails are found from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Delaware -They also have a relative species on the pacific coast named Lunatia Lewisii

Eggs - The snail discharges its eggs along with the mucus it leaves behind by the foot -These eggs are in a round collar shape or called a sand collar

-Moon snails, humans, and sunflower stars are the moon snails predators - They tend to live in mud or sand but can live at depths up to 1200 ft

- Their empty shells are usually new homes for hermit crabs, but the hermit crab doesn’t kill the snail for its shell -Moon snails come from the family Naitcidae Here is a Hermit Crab in a old moonshell
