2 What is this?

Agenda. Information Technology Division 3 Today’s discussion will focus on these questions: 1.What do we want to look like when we “grow up”? 2.What exactly do we aspire to do well? 3.Why does this matter? 4.How will we accomplish this?

Our vision. We are a high performing, customer-focused, proactive, and innovative division that supports the needs of LAUSD students and their families, employees, and the community by providing appropriate and effective technological solutions, facilitating each student's path to college and career readiness. Information Technology Division 4

Our mission. We enable student achievement and operational efficiency through deployment of appropriate technical solutions for our students and their families, all employees, and the community. Information Technology Division 5

Supportive Learning Environment Information Technology Division Our end goal. To optimize the “levers” of change and build an environment supportive of 21 st century learners st Century Learner Processes SystemsToolsDataInfrastructureOrganization

Our working assumption… Information Technology Division 7 STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT 1 1 OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY Where we invest our resources is as important as the resources themselves:

Increasing student achievement… Accomplished by… ☞ Providing a robust, flexible, and usable infrastructure ☞ Exposing students to technology early ☞ Executing a well-conceived technology assimilation plan ☞ Clearly articulating the value of technology ☞ Increasing the “IT Quotient” among stakeholders Information Technology Division 8

Increasing operational efficiency… Optimizing our current solutions. Information Technology Division 9 ☞ Support increased use of data within LAUSD ☞ “Sunset” legacy systems where appropriate ☞ Implement systems to support key business process: Attendance, budget, cafeteria management, libraries, textbooks, finance, payroll, transportation…and the list goes on.

Ron’s approach to developing the ITD plan… Information Technology Division 10 Meet with staff face-to-face Finalize ITD strategic plans Continue to support LAUSD Strategy Now Lead second wave of organizational change Revisit governance structure Communicate ITD “value” to Senior Leadership 120 days Communicate direction Lead first wave of organization structure change 90 days Listen and observe Conduct semi-annual random focus groups Conduct 1:1’s with various staff First 45 days

Observations… ☞ Stakeholders don’t understand us – ITD needs to be demystified. Information Technology Division 11 ☞ We need to continue focusing on student learning and achievement. ☞ The LAUSD community is asking us to be more customer service oriented.

Observations… ☞ We don’t always behave as though we are as large as we really are. Information Technology Division 12 ☞ We are not perceived as the professional organization that we really are…often even by ourselves ☞ Many of our systems and processes are complex, however…

“Complexity is OK when there is effective architecture (systems, processes, data, people, etc.) in place to help manage.” Information Technology Division 13
