Chapter 6: Policy Contexts Environmental Prevention and Regulation of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Pharmaceutical Industries  Environmental prevention strategies, such as advertising restrictions, are relevant to marginalized populations, including older adults.  Challenging target marketing of tobacco and other drugs is a policy level intervention designed to prevent and reduce problems.

Environmental Prevention and Regulation of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Pharmaceutical Industries  Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising by pharmaceutical industries has increased dramatically in the past 10 years, while FDA regulation of advertising has weakened.  DTC appears to target older adults and women.  Marketing practices designed to influence consumers to request drugs may contribute to overuse or misuse of prescription drugs.

Access to AODA Services for Older Adults  Funding for alcohol and other drug abuse treatment may not be adequate for older adults’ needs.  The service delivery system for alcohol and other drug assessment treatment is often fragmented and doesn’t serve the needs of older people.
