NWPMS IBCommunity & Service 10/4/12

Definition Community service is when you do something to benefit the community without expecting anything in return.

Remember: Just because something is a kind or caring thing to do, does not necessarily mean it is Community & Service.

How do you count hours? You can earn IB Community & Service hours for: 1.Service Learning projects in school 2.Participating in Community & Service after- school activities. 3.Participating in activities outside of school.

How many hours do I need?  6 th grade students must have at least 5 community service hours.  7 th and 8 th grade students must have at least 10 community service hours.

How do I turn in hours?  Complete an IB Community & Service reflection.  Turn in your completed reflection to your homeroom teacher so that it can be placed in your IB portfolio.  Log in your hours on Google Docs with the approval of your homeroom teacher.

Can you tell what is Community Service and what isn’t?  For each situation described on the next slides, decide whether IB Community Service hours can be earned.

Situation 1:  Connor goes to the public library to study with Amy. Connor is much better in math than Amy and ends up teaching her how to do the homework. Afterwards, they go to McDonalds for ice cream cones.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 2:  Sarah goes to the public library on the third Thursday of the month to volunteer. She ends up putting away some books and reading to some first graders in the storybook section. Afterwards, she walks home and does her homework.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 3:  Every Sunday Mindy goes to Britthaven to visit her grandma. They bake cookies and play checkers.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 4:  Mindy notices that her grandma’s best friend Miss Shirley never has any visitors. Mindy invites Paul and Lucy to go with her to Britthaven the following Sunday. They all have a lot of fun playing cards with Miss Shirley and some other lonely old folks.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 5:  Brenda’s mom gets called in to work an extra shift on Saturday afternoon. She asks Brenda to babysit her baby brother Lewis. Brenda had plans to go to the movies, but cancels them because she knows her mom can use the extra money.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 6:  Ben and Farrah help to teach bible school to the smaller kids each summer at their church. They read stories, take kids to the bathroom and help clean up after snacktime.

Is it Community and Service?

Situation 7:  Every two weeks, Nick has to mow the lawn at his house. He does not get paid; it is one of his chores.

Is it Community and Service?

There are lots of ways you can earn IB Community Service hours. If you are not sure if the activity counts, get pre-approval by asking Mrs. Oswalt. Check the ANNOUNCEMENT boards for school sponsored activities!

Remember: IB Learners are CARING!
