COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Mobile learning

“ Introducing mobile learning as part of a structured school improvement strategy” Copland Community School Graeme Plunkett iPod Touch project

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL A reminder…

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Context Large ethnically diverse inner city school based in Wembley High % FSM (33%) High % EAL learners (75%) Beginner EAL (5%) Beginner EAL Year 7 (22%) SEN (25%) Auditory, BESD, Visual impairment…….

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL History The school has experienced considerable turbulence in the past two years following: financial issues; the resignation of a head teacher; the suspension of the governing body and the creation of an Interim Executive Board; and two interim Head teachers - one for a term and one on a 0.6 FTE basis for twelve months. The school also suffered from the cancellation of its BSF re-build at an advanced stage of planning and engagement by staff, students and the community.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Ofsted grade ‘satisfactory’ (2010) key issues: Improve learning and progress in lessons through better teaching that: challenges all students and meets their individual needs, especially for those who are higher attainers and those who are not fully fluent in English is adapted using assessment throughout lessons routinely uses activity and discussion to engage students and help clarify their understanding develops students’ independence and creativity so that they are less reliant on support and take more initiative in assessing their own progress and understanding how to improve.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL My background SLT roles leading school improvement in two (…eventually!) ‘Outstanding’ schools. Digital development at Bodmin College used Palm Zire 72 devices and students’ mobile phones circa Parallel developing use of Apple technology in media Studies and Photography led to Apple RTC status ‘Outstanding’

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL A ‘journey’ ‘Staff training and sharing of good practice in ICT has led to greater expertise and confidence and this has led in turn to a greater degree of student involvement in lessons.’ (OFSTED 2007 Good School with outstanding Curriculum) ‘Creative modes of learning are being used effectively to raise standards, engage students and encourage a more active role in personal learning…Students report that making presentations, frequently using PowerPoint and other digital technology, is a common occurrence. This has helped develop self confidence and an appreciation of how technology can be used to enhance the quality of delivery…. Widespread and effective use of information and communication technology (ICT) and digital technology enable staff to teach in an innovative way that encourages creative learning.’ (OFSTED Survey visit Creative Learning 2008 Outstanding)

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL A destination… ‘Teachers and students using new technology and extending external partnerships…to spread confidence in the wider community about learning opportunities at Bodmin College….(The College) has a rich media environment with cutting edge technology which makes a marked contribution to the quality of learning.’ (OFSTED 2010 Outstanding)

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Copland Priorities Creating a curriculum that enables personalisation for all learners and which meets local, national and international needs. Addressing the fact that learning is most effective when the student is keen to learn and has a degree of control over what and how learning takes place Developing Learning beyond the classroom, including Personal Learning and Thinking Skills and the Functional Skills. Anticipating the knowledge, skills and understanding that will be required by effective and confident members of future communities, including digital literacy and technologies. Improving the quality and consistency of Learning and teaching

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL The Project All Year 7 learners have been given an iPod touch A number of subject specific and cross-curricular apps have been installed on each device Bespoke applications using GoMo Each device will have access to the WLAN Part funded by the e-learning foundation and voluntary parental contributions Approximately 30% of parents/carers have made significant contributions towards the project

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Rationale To improve attainment across the board To increase enjoyment, motivation and engagement in lessons for all students To ensure that all students have access to technology outside school To provide internet access in all lessons, encouraging independent, active and investigative learning for all students

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Apps Translation: Google Translate; itranslate…… Dictionaries and Thesauri Filming Voice Recorder Spelling: Spell It; Miss Spell…. Word games: Word to Word; Word Domino….. Mathematical: InQuizitor, Monkey Maths…… Filtered Internet access

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Examples Access group use iPods for starters – literacy and numeracy English group using iPods for work on Shakespeare Science group using iPods when looking at the structure cells, interactive periodic tables Filming and recording in Music Creating apps in ICT

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL App development We are trying to develop apps that the students can use, at the moment we have discussed: A Copland app (planner) A questionnaire app (AFL and student voice tool) A EAL app The idea is that students can develop the apps and then other students can use them, they could also develop the apps as revision tools or as an alternative to presentations to share work with other students.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Student feedback “I like having the iPod as there are fun games to play that help me with my learning, especially a game where I sort out letters to form words” Kishan. “You can use the iPod wherever you go, there are special apps for different things like the Shakespeare app. It has helped my learning and it helps me to understand things more” Hamza.

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Student feedback 10 Students were asked to rate the following statements from 1-5 (1 strongly disagree 5 strongly agree). Having an iPod helps me with my learning – average score 4 I enjoy using my iPod in lessons – average score 3.75 I use my iPod at home for learning – average score 2.0 (we need to look at this) The things that they said they enjoyed about using the iPod were: In lessons I like using the science and maths games as it helps me to learn new things I like using the Shakespeare app as we have found out lots of things about Shakespeare In Music we can use the piano and it means we all have enough equipment I enjoy using it at home to look up new information and do research I find it really useful as I can use it to help set reminders and organise myself

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL Staff feedback ‘I have used the i pods with five Yr 7 classes. They have used the Art periods app to research Pop art, the camera function to take photographs and the art camera app to create a pop art style picture. So far it has gone well: the pupil engagement is excellent. The pro's far out way the negatives: it’s allowing them to research independently and they are getting the opportunity to create digital work which Key Stage 3 classes have never done before.’

COPLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL “I like my iPod as it makes learning more fun and it has helped me to improve especially in Math's and Science” Omar.
