doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 2 Presentation Outline This presentation provides a working basis for a PAR for WPP Each slide gives a proposal for a specific portion of the PAR –The actual text is presented first, followed by explanatory notes –The explanatory notes give background information, but will not be included in the actual PAR document The routine boilerplate text in the PAR is not included Focus is on Title, Scope, Purpose, and Additional Explanatory Notes
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 3 Title Draft Recommended Practice for the Evaluation of Wireless Performance Notes: –Clarify that this is only for performance, not for any other wireless technology –This is a recommended practice, not a standard (too hard) or a guide (too loose) –The title does not contain “prediction”, but this is OK – there is no need for the title of the document to contain the name of the SG or TG
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 4 Scope The scope of the project is to provide a set of metrics, measurement methodologies, and test conditions to enable measuring and predicting the performance of WLAN devices and networks at the component and application level. Notes: –“Test conditions” voted in by straw poll as compromise between “controlled environment”/”test environment” (implies laboratory conditions) and a completely uncontrolled environment (implies repeatable testing is difficult) –Restricted to devices and networks, no other wireless protocols –Some debate over “devices and networks”
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 5 Purpose Current Version The purpose of the project is to improve the services that an WLAN provides by defining methodologies that enable equipment providers and users to consistently measure and predict performance of WLAN devices and networks. Notes: –Debate over word “consistently” –An alternate suggestion for a crisper and more direct Purpose statement is proposed – see next slide
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 6 Purpose Alternate suggestion The purpose of the project is to enable planning, testing and comparison of WLAN devices based on a common and accepted set of metrics, methodologies and test conditions. Notes: –More direct and to the point
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 7 Additional Explanatory Notes Baseline Standards The project will assume as a baseline the existence of Reaff 2003, with amendments e, g, h, i, j and k. The project shall also take as input the channel models and usage models defined in Task Group n. The work of Task Groups r and s will also be considered. Notes: –We want to list all of the amendments, as everything up until amendment k will be rolled into the main document at the time that WPP is under way
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 8 Additional Explanatory Notes Target Audience The target audience for the project output includes developers of chipsets, components, equipment and software that uses or must interact with wireless equipment, as well as users of equipment, including system installers, IT managers and test laboratories. Notes: –The list of users is intended to not be exhaustive, but touch on the major consumers
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 9 Additional Explanatory Notes Definition of “Prediction” For the purposes of this project the definition of prediction is as follows: the use of multiple input parameters to estimate performance characteristics, wherein input parameters are defined to be device characteristics, network layout and usage parameters, and performance characteristics are defined to be specific metrics useful in network planning. Notes: –This definition was substantially taken from the work of the Prediction ad-hoc in between the March and May meetings
doc.: IEEE /582 SubmissionTom Alexander, VeriWave, Inc..Slide 10 Additional Explanatory Notes Differences from k Bullet list: Online vs. offline Pre-production/post-production Not a running network/is a running network Measurements made using test equipment / using.11 devices Measurements possible in a test environment vs. difficult or impossible in a real environment (and accuracy and repeatability) Differences in methodology Emphasis is on the methodology rather than the measurement. WPP emphasizes definitions of metrics; TGk emphasizes network management Notes: –Actual k Scope: “ This project will define Radio Resource Measurement enhancements to provide interfaces to higher layers for radio and network measurements.” –Actual k Purpose: “ The original standard has a basic set of radio resource measurements for internal use only. These measurements and others are required to provide services; such as roaming, coexistence, and others; to external entities. It is necessary to provide these measurements and other information in order to manage these services from an external source.”
