LATIN AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC MANAGEMENT (ILLGP)

MANY LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES LACK LEADERSHIP-PROMOTION INSTITUTIONS Political parties’ system is broken Civil service is disrupted Universities are disconnected from public & governmental affairs

Legacy of the long era of authoritarian regimes Intellectual fixation with impersonal notions (structures, institutions) or collective ones Inherent tension between the notions of leadership and equality before the law DISTRUST IN LEADERS

Democracy’s sustainability is based on institutions (parties, branches of government, rule of law, etc.) … But institutions are human creations, and rely on the action of individuals INSTITUTIONAL-BASED DEMOCRACY

In contemporary politics, increasingly the messenger is the message The candidate’s charisma is becoming more important than the party’s organization or ideological platform PERSONIFICATION OF POLITICS

… the audacity to bring about changes, and the passion to make their vision flourish … the analytical capacities to think strategically, and the managerial skills to master the science of delivery … transformational and also transactional style … integrity and genuine commitment to public service WE NEED PUBLIC LEADERS WITH…

ILLGP: LEADERSHIP FOR DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE & INCLUSIVE PROSPERITY ILLGP’s launching ceremony. Peru’s Congress, Lima, October 23 rd., 2012.

Coordination between training providers is required to improve quality, fill gaps, enhance accessibility and develop new (more cost- effective & higher impact) platforms THERE’S PLENTY OF TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Coursera and edX are the frontrunners in the MOOCs (massive online open course) revolution. Their model is proving to be outstandingly successful. The MOOC model is overcoming the traditional accessibility & high dropout problems of e-learning. Why not a MOOC for emerging Latin American public leaders? WE NEED A COURSERA FOR LATIN AMERICAN PUBLIC LEADERS

We aspire to be catalysts of the MOOC-platform revolution for emerging Latin American public leaders, involving international organizations (IDB’s INDES, WB’s WBI, UNDP’s VS) and universities Marginally, we deliver training courses, conduct research and publish academic material on public leadership for Latin America ILLGP’s ROLE

Our notion of “emerging public leaders” is purposely broad Our main focus are young individuals who already have some experience in the public interest realm, be it in government or in CSOs Inclusiveness is part of our DNA OUR MAIN AUDIENCE
