Membership Report to NC Federation of Chapters Board, NARFE Theron Rumsey, Membership Coordinator November 9, 2010
Travel and Meeting There was no travel during the second quarter of this reporting year. I continued to assist Paul and Vilma regarding development of a retention plan. On October 13, 2010, I assisted Chapter 156 Public Relations Officer Tom Beatty by presenting the NARFE National PowerPoint presentation introducing NARFE to the AFGE union chapter at the Asheville VA hospital. This connects us with 400+ active Federal employees. It is worth noting that the Secretary of the AFGE chapter is a NARFE member. She gave a very positive testimonial for NARFE.
Membership Reports The reports are current through September, 2010 and were distributed to the Area VP’s. Thanks to Vilma for assistance with the distribution. The M112’s for October were not available in time for this report.
Membership Summary An overall picture of our membership status is shown by The ‘Voting Member Summary’ through September This summary showed that at the end of the second quarter this year the NC Federation has a net loss of 95 members. However, this loss of membership included 79 members lost to death or transferring out. This loss has occurred over the past 4 months after a growing trend the first two months this year. Area VP’s, use this report to track the status of chapters in your area. Only a few chapters showed a slight trend toward growth since June: Ashe-Alegany Chpt. 800, Area III; Durham Chpt. 566, Area IV; and Wayne_Goldsboro, Chpt. 1830, Area IV. Let’s strive to make sure that all chapters are utilizing the monthly M112 reports to contact, in particular, those members who have received their second dues notice, or have dropped their membership and are following thru on contacting prospective members.
New Member Recruitment Recruitment has hurt our growth this past quarter. Last year the Federation average 51 recruited members per month. This quarter we have averaged 19. Although we are emphasizing membership retention, we should not pass up the opportunities for recruiting new members.
Retention The critical category of membership is those members that choose to drop their membership. As pointed out previously, these folks can make or break an effort to grow membership. Last year’s average for dropped members was 57/month. Thus far this year we are trending above that average 63/month. Chapter leadership should be communicating with those members each month that appear on the M112 list for receiving their second dues notice and those appearing on the Dropped Member list. Encourage them not to drop their membership. Secondly, promote Dues Withholding and do those things that keep members informed. Keep the importance of NARFE obvious.
Let’s grow membership against the National trend. YOUR EFFORTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
