Presentation transcript:

I am a newly married 29 year old Hispanic, catholic female with two loving parents, 4 siblings, 3 nieces and 4 nephews. The two men in the picture are my best friend/husband Fred and Father Thaddeus of Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church. We have been married 1 year.

I have always worked with children. My first job was at a day care center during my senior year of high school. I was a child care provider. After I graduated high school. I attended San Antonio College and worked full-time at The Children’s Shelter. I worked mainly with children 5-12 years old. It was a really tough job. I had to see children arrive daily in cop cars, or with their social worker. During visits it would hurt my heart when a child would cry when a parent would have to leave. Then, later to find out the parent the child was crying for was physically abusing them. I didn’t understand it for awhile, how a child would have so much love for a person who emotionally, physically, mentally abused them. After a year of working at The Children’s Shelter I could not continue. I became depressed and could not emotionally handle working there and attending school full-time. I decided it was time to move on. For the next 4 years I worked part-time at a after school learning program for middle school students. I started as a office aide and then went on to be a program leader. I was the supervisor of the students and staff who were part of the program. After I graduated college I did a 360 and went back to working with children who had been abused. In order to understand how I came to my first professional experience it was important to go further back to my work experience. My first professional work experience was working for Child Protective Services as an Investigation worker. I felt for a long time that I wanted to work for CPS because I would be able to help children. However, I was half wrong. Most of the families I worked with, it was too late to make an impact. After a year of working for CPS I went on to my current position. I am an advisor, social worker, truancy officer, and a plus 1 for many of my students at San Antonio Can High School. Although my professional title is “Student Advisor”. I do much more then just advise students. I make home visits, phone calls on a daily basis to get my students to school. I have been working for San Antonio Can for two years. It is a place I wish to stay for a long time.

My interest consist of spending time with my husband, family, and friends especially my nieces and nephews. I also love to read and watch movies.

I attended 3 public schools. Collins Garden Elementary on the left, Lowell middle school on the right, and Burbank High School in the middle. When I was in Elementary school I had the best teacher. I was lucky enough to have her for 4 th and 5 th grade. She would always use a hands on approach when teaching us. She made everything into a art project. In 5 th grade we decided to make a time capsule. We put a video of what we wanted to be when we grew up and one special object that meant something to us. The next Friday after I graduated from high school. We all got to go back and see how much we changed. I remember watching the video and thinking to myself, 8 people in that video are my best friends tell this day and I still wanted to work with children in some kind of way.

The purpose of me going back to school for my Masters Degree is to hopefully one day become the Vice Principal of the school I currently work at. I currently live in the community of the school. I enjoy this very much because I can relate to the students we serve. Having a Masters Degree in Education is following the path I need to in order to make it possible. I want to be well rounded on the different types of schools and teaching. If you want to learn about my school please copy and paste the link or click on link.

I have many great quotes in regards to education. However, the one that impacted me the most is the following: He who opens a school door, closes a prison. ~Victor Hugo I truly believe this. Part of my job is going to truancy court. Our judge once told the students who were awaiting trial that she just got out of a video conference with a man who had an open case with truancy court. She explained to everyone how truancy is just one of the first steps to worse crimes. I tell this story often to students who I feel are heading down the wrong path. I was able to have the Judge speak at our school to students who were heading down that path. It was a very memorable moment.
