As we know, poems are mostly written to show people’s emotions.. In Chinese, we have 诗言志,诗言情,诗歌合为事而作. That is, people write poems for different reasons, then we have different kind of poems. Next go over quickly the poems in the reading part. And then tick the correct box/boxes for each question on P9

英诗的种类 从诗的内容和形式两方面看, 英诗可分为 : 1史诗 ( Epic) 2戏剧诗 ( Dramatic poems) 这四种为叙事诗 3故事诗 ( Metrical Tale) 4民谣 (Ballad) 5抒情诗 (lyric) 6说理诗 (Didactic poems) 7模仿诗 (Parody) 8打油诗 (Clerihews) 下面举一打油诗的例子: (Narrative poems)

Let’s look at an example of Clerihews. Let’s say your art teacher was named Mr Shaw, and you wanted to write a clerihew about him. You might start your clerihew like this: Our art teacher, Mr Shaw, Really knows how to draw. But his awful paintings, Have caused many faintings.

Poetry is a great form of literature. There are different kinds of rules for poems, so the forms of poems are quite different from country to country. The passage in Reading will tell us something about forms of English poems. Now read the text on P 10 and find out information to complete the following form.

Poem C 1. What sport do you think the speaker is writing about? 2. Did his or her team win the game? 3. Why didn’t the players win? Write down three excuses that the speaker gives. 4. Does the speaker really believe his or her own excuses? How do you know? 5. Do you ever give excuses when you don’t win or do something? football No Didn’t have enough time; didn’t have thousands of fans screaming; stayed up too late,and ran out of energy. No. Because at the end of the poem the speaker admitted that they didn’t play well enough to win.

Poem D,E 1. What subject is the speaker writing about? 2. Does the speaker like the subject? Give a reason for your answer. The speaker is writing about his / her brother in Poem D. In Poem E, the writer is writing about Summer.

What is the story that the poem tells? Tell the story in your own words A woman’s husband has gone away. The woman waits for him by the river where she last saw him. she waits and waits never moving form that spot and never speaking, while the river continues to flow and the wind and rain come and go.
