DO NOW: Fill out the first row of your Role of the Church and Crusades Scales 1. Christian Church Takes Shape Questions 2. Poem Project Due Monday HOMEWORK

The Influence of the Church I  The Church was the center of life in medieval western Europe and the church building was the center of community activity  Religion was such a part of daily life that people said a certain number of prayers to decide how long to cook an egg

The Influence of the Church I  People looked to the Church to explain world events and hoped prayer and religious devotion would keep away such disasters.  The Church taught that salvation, or the saving of a one’s soul, would come to those who followed the Church’s teachings.

The Influence of the Church II  After the collapse of Rome, the Roman Catholic Church played a vital role in society by providing leadership and, at times, even organized the distribution of food.  Monasteries provided hospitality to refugees and travelers. Monks also copied and preserved old texts, and in this way helped keep both new and ancient learning alive.

The Influence of the Church II  By 1050, the Church was the largest landholder in Europe and land came through gifts from the wealthy as well as being taken by force.  The medieval Church added to its wealth by collecting a tithe. Each person was expected to give one-tenth of his money, food, or labor to help support the Church.

Gregory Vs. Henry
