Unit 1.2 Chapters

Learning outcomes State that noble gases have a stable electron configuration. Describe the different types of chemical bonding. Predict the type of bonding from the elements involved. © Pearson Education Ltd 2008 This document may have been altered from the original

What is significant about the noble gases?

Electronic arrangement Draw the electronic structures of helium, neon and argon

Noble gases In group 0 All electrons are paired, with opposite spins The outer shell contains two electrons (He) or 8 electrons (all others). Extremely stable Unreactive Two electrons in the s orbital and two each in the three p orbitals P and s orbitals most important for bonding There are no known compounds of Ne or He but compounds of Ar, Xe and Rn have been prepared with difficulty

The octet rule Noble gases have 8 electrons in their outer shell, makes them stable Other elements combine so that they have eight electrons in their outer shell Unpaired electrons pair up to form a chemical bond This results in the same configuration as a noble gas This tendency to acquire a noble gas configuration is called the Octet Rule.
