MUSIC

Music played an important role in the lives of the people who lived during the Elizabethan era.

Elizabethan Music was a major form of entertainment.

The Most Popular Elizabethan Musical Instrument - the Lute

But the most popular combination of Elizabethan musical instruments would become known as an 'English Consort'. This combination of Elizabethan musical instruments initially consisted of 4 musical instruments. This quartet comprised of: Violin Viol Lute flute

The 'English Consort' was the first English string quartet! It proved to be so popular that in 1599 Thomas Morley published a book of 'Consort Lessons’.

The collection of Elizabethan musical instruments included the musical instruments from the Medieval period together with the musical instruments which emerged during the Elizabethan era.

in some cases the Tambourine was played the tambourine is a small drum consisting of a circular frame with a skin stretched over it and several pairs of metal jingles attached to the frame, played by striking with the knuckles or shaking

Combinations of musical instruments, as in the modern orchestra, were still in the experimental stage but provided the opportunity to create unusual and creative music.

String instruments were either plucked or bowed.

The Elizabethan musicians enjoyed experimenting with various combinations of musical instruments.

The Psaltery is a cross between a harp and a guitar
