“The Impact of Participation in Sports on Academic Achievement”

What is Sports & Education?  1) Sport refers to a competitive physical activity. Examples: rugby, cricket, volleyball, basketball ( netball), baseball ( softball), hockey, soccer ( football) and so on.  Sport is generally recognized as activities based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity.  Sports are usually governed by rules to ensure fair competition and consistent adjudication of the winner.  2) Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, research, or simply through autodidacticism. autodidacticism  Generally, it occurs through any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts. Examples: kindergarten, primary, secondary, high school, college, university prepatory year, tertiary, university and so on

Why is Sports Important?  1) Development Aspect  Participation boost self esteem, perception of self, and physical development ( DeMeulenaere 130)  This motivates them to do well so they can continue to play for their team  2) Educational Aspect  Student on sports team to meet academic eligibility  These students need to meet a grade requirement in order to play for their team

Ways in how Sports promote academic success!  There are “six” different ways that sports served to promote student success:  1) Structuring schedules  2) Creating incentives  3) Building confidence  4) Developing positive adult and peer role models  5) And getting students to develop future aspirations  6) Students on sports teams have to meet academic eligibility

Educational Aspect  Students, they need to meet a grade requirement in order to stay on the team  It is believed that sports encourage kids not only to succeed as athletes, but also to succeed as students  This motivates them to do well so they can continue to play for their team  Students are also given sponsorship and scholarship opportunity to attend higher education to further their studies

Development Aspect  Participating in sports is extremely important to many students  They would not want to risk getting kicked off their team  Therefore they do what they have to do to meet the grade requirement  Sports can be extremely beneficial to students’ academic performance because it can motivate them to learn and do well

Method – Students and Family Study  Participants of qualitative research methods involving observations and interview techniques used on 4 selected students, their families and friends in order to find out whether physical activity links to the student’s academic performance.  To present his findings on the student’s involvement in sports promoted success in the long run and moreover, in getting the students to develop future aspirations by building confidence within themselves with this involvement with peers

Data Analysis  Case Study  Table 1  Academic Achievement of Student Athletes and Non Athletes  The charts shows results of a study conducted in USA Middle- School to asses the impact sports participation on academic achievement in middle school environment in

Data Analysis  Case Study  Table 2  Academic Achievement of One, Two and Three Sports Athletes  Note:  Grade Point Average is calculated out of 100.  Attendance measures the number of days of school missed in a year  Behavior referrals are the average number of times the student faces disciplinary action

Conclusion  According to researches and studies conducted by a number of professionals but I solely refer to Mr DeMulenaere, E. (2010). PLAYING THE GAME: SPORTS AS A FORCE FOR PROMOTING IMPROVED ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE FOR URBAN YOUTH. Journal Of Cultural Diversity, 17(4), that sports do not hinder academic progression instead it helps boost the child's development. Their involvement with Sports helps them face challenges of not only by being a successful individual but also being a part of a group with their peers at school.
