JFJ 2013 Aim: to identify the best upwind site for the 2014 campaign P. Connolly Centre for Atmospheric Science

Which site is best `connected’ to JFJ (and preferably `out of cloud’)

WRF run 1000 m x 1000 m Morrison microphysics (with mods) Tracers released constantly from: –Schilthorn –Kleine Scheidegg –Niesen –Eggishorn Look at tracer concentration at JFJ. Also look at when JFJ is in cloud and sites are not.

Schilthorn appears to have the best connectivity for the 2013 experiment WRF model suggests Concentrations of the tracer from Schilthorn are highest when taken at the JFJ

Ditto, stats taken from to Tracer released from

Model validation from station data Wind speed (red = data, black = wrf run)

Model validation from station data Wind direction (red = data, black = wrf run)

Model validation from station data Temperature (red = data, black = wrf run)

Model validation from station data RH (red = data, black = wrf run)

Model cloud fields (not got around to analysing the JFJ cloud data yet)

How often are we in cloud at JFJ and in cloud at the different sites? Model suggests that sites are in- cloud approx. 12 – 35% of the time when JFJ is in cloud. Thus 65-88% of the time are not in cloud

Best site? All in all the modelling with WRF suggests that Schilthorn has the best connectivity and is still out of cloud for a good fraction of the time, 65%, when the JFJ is in cloud. Wind direction comparison is a bit weired – I need to check I calculated this correctly from the WRF output. Next steps: –We need to run WRF a little bit longer (ECMWF analyses – Chris Dearden please) –We need to find out about access to Schilthorn and power (also about our power requirements – Chris Hoyle et al and us – Keith or Mike?) –We need to proceed with analysing the 2013 data – Paul Connolly will do probes other than CAPS, 2DS and CPI3V, which need processing – Jonny, et al. –Archive data: need to revisit data from the CLACE archives.

Instruments?

Questions Hi Paul, Before I contact the Schilthorn people, a few questions (maybe more to follow): 1) What will the instruments be housed in? do you have a photo of what the set up will look like, or a description and dimensions? 2) Between what dates do you want it up there? 3) Can you guess the power consumption? It should be possible to get the met data, Ill check... Cheers, Chris. Schilthorn is also accessible at this time of year (between 27/04/2013 and 10/11/2013) by cable car. I’ll get back to you when I have managed to check things like power/permission etc. I think a comparison of aerosol when neither site is in-cloud is a very good idea.

Questions at the PSI and it may be possible for us to come up with someone to do some data processing. Would this be helpful for you guys? If we had the person, could you provide the data and basic instructions on how to identify and flag bad values, and anything else that needs doing to your data? This person would then (ideally) create one of those files that I have been thinking about, for each of the campaigns.
