TURKISH MODEL FOR VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE SEPTEMBER 2010 SOFIA by SABAN BERK PRESENTATION FOR THE PROJECT ATTRACTİVE VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE FOR PUPILS FINAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

W HAT IS VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE ? Vocational guidance means helping someone to find at least a suitable career choice. Vocational Guidance Service (VGS) helps individuals (1)to realize their potentials and (2)to choose right profession for them.

W HY VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE Choosing a profession means not only choosing an occupation but also choosing a life style at the same time. Profession affects individuals’ whole life e.g. daily life style, marriage choice, environment to live etc. A profession could make individuals happy or unhappy

HOW IS THE BEST VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE 1. Diognising psychological characteristics of individuals 2. Determining job requirements (which jobs requires which individual characteristics) 3. Matching psychological characteristics with job requirements.

VOCATIONAL GUIDANCE IN TURKEY 1. Ordinary Activities -Each school both primary and secondary has guidance teacher who guide students about the professions. Guidance teachers diagnose psychological characteristics of students and recommend his/her family suitable professions. Families with students decide to send students certain kind of field. 2. Extra-Ordinary Activities VET INFO CENTERS and related web pages help individuals to introduce for choosing right professions.

E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -1 ( VET INFO CENTERS ACTIVITIES ) VET INFO CENTERS’ announce Presentation Plan that includes date and professions that will be presented for target schools. After getting our announced Presentation Plan, schools’ authorized persons ask to students which professions do they want to know in detail (maybe, with short questionnaire).

E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -1 ( VET INFO CENTERS ACTIVITIES ) As soon as school specify students’ interest and desire that which professions they want to participate in, schools call the VET INFO CENTER for booking. VET INFO CENTER’s staffs prepare list when and which schools come to presantation.

In the presantation day, the students with two teacher come to VET INFO CENTER. That day, VET INFO CENTER usually has two kind of expert. One of them from educational area and mostly experinced teacher about the profession which will be presented. The ohter one is from industry who is most experienced and well trained person in that area. E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -1 ( VET INFO CENTERS ACTIVITIES )

These two person together explaine and clarify; a- What qualifications students should have to choose that profession? b- What are the advantages and disadvantages of that profession? c- What are job opportunities of that profession in industry? d- What is probable future status of that profession? After experts’ presantation, students and teachers could ask question to the expert about the profession.(ıf any) E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -1 ( VET INFO CENTERS ACTIVITIES )

Each school has a set of CD that includes information about the professions. Students could get the CDs and learn from them information about the professions at school and/or at home E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -2 ( ELECTRONICS RESOURCES )

E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -3 (W EB P AGE ) There is web page created via SVET project that includes information about the professions. Pupils are informed about the web page and taught how to use it at schools. Pupils could access the web page and get informed about the professions anywhere if there is internet access.

E XTRA -O RDINARY A CTIVITIES -4 ( TRAINING GUIDANCE TEACHERS ) Each year there are two period of training for guidance teachers at VET INFO CENTERS; 1- At the beginning of the first semester when newly appointed and incoming teachers are trained. They are informed about VET INFO CENTERS’ activities and given a set of CD. Anymore, they will be given two kind of CD. The other one was prepared 2-At the beginning of the second semester when teachers are appointed to Istanbul from other cities.
