 A condition in which insufficient oxygen reaches the cells. › Causes:  Obstructed Airway  Shock  Inadequate breathing  Fatal or non fatal drowning  Strangulation  Choking  Suffocation  Cardiac Arrest  Head Trauma  Carbon Monoxide Poisoning  Anaphylactic Shock

 Resp. Distress is a condition where breathing becomes difficult.  Resp. Arrest is a condition where breathing stops.  Resp. Distress can lead to Resp. Arrest in most cases.

 Slow or rapid breathing  Unusually deep or shallow breathing  Shortness of breath or noisy breathing  Dizziness, drowsiness or light-headedness  Changes in levels of consciousness  Increased heart rate  Chest pain or Discomfort  Skin that is flush, pale, ashen or bluish  Unusually moist or cool skin  Gasping for breath  Wheezing, gurgling or high pitch noises  Inability to speak full sentences  Tingling in hands, feet, or lips  Apprehensive or fearful feelings

 Maintain an open airway  Summons EMS  Help victim rest in a comfortable position  Reassure and comfort the victim  Assist the victim with taking any prescribed meds  Keep the victim from getting chilled or overheated  Administer emergency oxygen

 Someone with asthma or emphysema might try to do purse lipped breathing.  After they inhale, have them exhale through pursed lips like they are blowing out a candle.
