Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs

Pathway of Alcohol in the Body Mouth-esophagus-stomach-small intestines- Blood Stream- BAC-Blood Alcohol Content & BAL-Blood Alcohol Level Measure of alcohol in your blood and therefore your brain Brain- Alcohol shuts down brain cells in the following order Cerebral Cortex- Decision making, judgement, inhibitions Coordination & Muscular control Reaction time & Balance Senses * Brain stem- Control of breathing and heart rate

Alcohol Metabolism *A person can die of alcohol poisoning Liver- The liver oxidizes or breaks down alcohol at a rate of.5 ounce per hour..5 ounces of alcohol = 1 can beer (12oz), 1 glass wine (5oz), 1 shot hard liquor (1oz)

Tobbaco There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke. The 3 most dangerous are:  Nicotine- Addictive drug  Tar- Turns lungs black and makes the lungs inelastic  Carbon Monoxide- Replaces oxygen in the lungs

Marijuana Effects Heart- Marijuana increases heart rate Lungs- Marijuana smoke contains 50-70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke Brain- Marijuana affects thinking, learning, memory, reaction time and sensory and time perception Reproductive System- Marijuana can affect menstrual cycles, sperm count, sexual development and pregnancy Long Term Affects- Marijuana use can lead to anxiety and panic disorders Addiction Potential- Psychological and physical effects such as irritability, sleeplessness and anxiety have been observed in users trying to stop

Addiction Addiction is a process where a person becomes dependent on a substance. They first feel a chemical high (euphoria). They then build a tolerance to the substance and need more and more of the drug to get the same effect. After a while, they no longer get the effects of the drug and will eventually need the drug just to feel normal. Without the drug, they will experience symptoms of anxiety and physical withdrawal (dysphoria).

The Problem with Drugs Short Term Effects  Loss of Body Control- Reaction Time, Balance  Loss of Mind Control- Decision Making, Judgment, Perception  Drug Interactions (2 different drugs=bad effect)  Drug Overdose Long Term Effects  Deterioration of Body Systems ( esp. heart & liver)  Decreased Brain Functioning  Addiction (loss of money, job, relationships, self)
