Born in Facebook Theoretical background Key Concepts: – Rhizome – Hybridity – Communication thermostat – Commucational empowerment Conclusion

Digital Athen Robert Dahl: telecommunications technologies have a key role in making possible the "advanced democratic country," where policy is firmly anchored in „new demos." (1989) Amitai Etzioni sees in the Internet the possibility of an advancement of the state of public affairs through "teledemocracy”. (1993) Mitchell Kapor claims the Net will "enable a Jeffersonian revolution."' (1995) Nicholas Negroponte, who expects "the nation-state to evaporate" under the influence of new technologies.(1995) (Bimber 1998:134)

Malcolm Gladwell

First, contagious spreading of revolutionary movements predates social media. Second, Granovetter’s renowned thesis on the strength of weak ties is challenged. As weak ties show their strength in certain situations, while this may not be the case in other contexts. Strong ties can be more important in dangerous situations. Third, the mobilization potential of social media is quetioned. Internet access rates, actual number Facebook users in the countries of the Arab spring. Therefore the view that social media was a catalyst of these revolutions cannot be upheld. Fourth, social media-based social movements leave behind digital footprints that authoritarian powers can exploit for the surveillance and oppression of such movements and their members.
