Chemical Hazards I Master Notes

Chemical Hazards Certain chemical substances are more harmful than others A poisonous substance is called a toxin

Chemical Hazards Amount and duration of exposure affect the degree of harm a substance can cause

Chemical Hazards There are three things to remember when working with chemicals  Know the chemicals  Know the hazards  Read the labels

Chemical Hazards There are three ways a chemical can enter the body  Through the skin (splashes or spills)  By inhalation (breathing fumes)  By ingestion (swallowing)

Chemical Hazards Personal protection should be worn appropriate to the level of hazard (IGC H7)

Chemical Hazards There are several types of personal protective gear that must be used when working with chemicals  safety glasses  face shield  plastic or rubber gloves  apron

Chemical Hazards Exposure to some chemicals may have short-term effects Exposure to other chemicals may cause long-term health problems, even cancer

Chemical Hazards Do not pour chemicals down the drain Dispose of chemicals in an environmentally safe manner (IGC H11)

Chemical Hazards Check the manufacturers recommendations for disposal Follow state and local environmental protection requirements for proper disposal

Summary When working with a chemical  Read the label  Know what you are dealing with  Know how it can enter your body  Know how to protect yourself from it  Know how to dispose of it properly

Chemical Hazards ____________ and ____________ of ______________ affect the degree of ______________ a substance can cause

Chemical Hazards There are three things to remember when working with chemicals  Know the ______________  Read the ______________

Chemical Hazards II Master Notes

HMIS Labels Tell you at a glance the hazards of a chemical Not all containers have colored HMIS labels

HMIS Labels The higher the number on an HMIS, the more dangerous its is 0 is low danger or no danger 4 is the highest danger

Types of Chemicals Two common types of hazardous chemicals  organic solvents  plate-making chemicals

Organic Solvents Examples:  Blanket and roller wash  Fountain solutions  Plate cleaners  Glaze removers  Degreasers

VOCs Volatile Organic Compounds Used in blanket washes  Work well and evaporate quickly  Pass into the air Proper ventilation is required to exhaust VOCs

Solvents Harmful to the skin or eyes Read containers before using to determine what to do in case of contact Typical treatment is to flush with water for 15 minutes

When Working with Solvents When handling chemical solvents use  Safety Glasses  Goggles  Face shields  Gloves  Aprons

When Working with Solvents Do not attempt to identify a solvent by sniffing it Keep lids or covers on cans and drums Do not use large quantities of solvents in one area Cleanup spills immediately

When Working with Solvents Know the proper handling, cleanup, and disposal procedures for the chemical you are using Place soiled rags in an approved safety can Ventilate the press area where needed

Plate-making chemicals Can irritate the skin and cause burns Always wear rubber or plastic gloves or apply barrier creams when working with plate-making chemicals

Plate-making chemicals Wearing an appropriate apron will keep chemicals from reaching clothing and soaking through to the skin Ventilate the plate-making area

Plate-making chemicals Food and beverages should never be allowed to come into contact with chemicals Wash your hands before eating

Plate-making chemicals Chemicals that are corrosive, flammable, or poisonous should be properly labeled and stored in a safety cabinet

Plate-making chemicals Plate-making chemicals are concentrated Always pour chemicals into water Never pour water into a chemical
