The Cardiovascular System

“Cardio” is Greek for “Heart” “Vascular” relates to “tubes” The cardiovascular system transports blood around the body. It carries nutrients, gases, and hormones to body cells and waste products from body cells.

The Cardiovascular System The cardiovascular system is comprised of: The Heart Blood Blood Vessels Veins Arteries Capillaries

The Heart The heart is the pump that sends blood around the body. Your heart is about the size of your fist and is almost in the center of your chest.

The Heart The heart has 2 sides: Right side Left side This is from the first person point of view. What actors call stage right and stage left.

The Heart Right Side: pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs (blue) Left Side: pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body (red)

The Heart The heart has 4 chambers

Blood Vessels Blood travels throughout your body in tubes called blood vessels. There are 3 types of blood vessels: Arteries = away from heart Veins = to heart Capillaries = deliver blood

Blood Circulation Blood move in circuits or loops around the body. Pulmonary Circulation: blood is pumped to and away from the lungs. Systemic Circulation: blood is pumped to and away from the body

Blood Blood is a fluid that carries gases, nutrients, and wastes throughout the body. Blood is composed of: Plasma Platelets White Blood Cells Red Blood Cells

Blood Plasma The fluid part of the blood Platelets Aid in blood clotting White Blood Cells Fight pathogens such as bacteria and viruses Red Blood Cells Carry oxygen
