Coal & Oil Review

Team with the most points at the end wins

What are at least 2 concerns for miners about mining underground?  Cave-ins, explosions, toxic gases, black lung, lack of oxygen

Describe 2 ways that coal affects the environment.  Acid rain (sulfur), Deforestation for mines, heavy metal drainage from mines into water; global warming from CO2 released

Why does coal cause black lung or lung cancer?  Dust from mining or burning coal releases small particles that get stuck in lungs.

What effects do toxic heavy metals have on humans?  Birth defects, loss of sensation, mental incapabilities

What is the relationship between impurities in coal & the amount of air pollution?  More impurities= more air pollution

Label each letter. Give a brief explanation for each.

Draw oil formation showing the source, cap and reservoir rocks.

What is leaked into the river from acid mine drainage? What color is the river?  Heavy metals  Orange

List the uses of oil.  Electricity/heat, manufacture plastics, fuels like jet fuel, diesel, gasoline, kerosene, waxes etc.

How do tar sands & oil shale differ from crude oil?  They are solids. Have to be heated to become oil.

What does OPEC stand for?  ORGANIZATION OF PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES

List 2 pros and 2 cons of oil.  Pros: Cheap for plants, easy to store & move, a lot of energy  Cons: pollution, global warming, nonrenewable, accidents

Must get all correct for a point: Hottest burning coal: Dirtiest coal: Coal found nearest us: Coal with most carbon: Burned near the mine: Anth. Peat Anth. Lignite

Where is oil found? Ocean floor or on land

Where is oil processed?  REFINERY

Contrast how coal and oil are formed.  Coal= swamp plants under rock  Oil= marine organisms under rock

Term for returning the land to its original state after mining? RECLAMATION

What two external conditions are needed to make coal or oil?  HEAT & PRESSURE

What type of coal did Centralia have? What happened at Centralia?  Anthracite  Landfill fire set abandoned coal mine burning for past 50 yrs.

List the uses of coal.  Steel, electricity, manufacture plastics, heat
