Identification of lesson Clsss:nine/ten English 2 nd paper(Grammar) Date:08/12/2015 Time:50 minutes

Test of pre-knowledge Man is mortal/ Man is not immortal. He is honest./He is not dishonest. Karim is too weak to walk/Karim is so weak that he cannot walk I know him/ He is known to me. What is difference between first one and second one. Actually there is no difference between the two in sense/meaning but there form is different.

Today’s lesson Changing sentences: Simple/Compound/Complex

Learning outcomes At the end of the lesson students will be able to a) Detect the simple, compound and complex sentence. b) Make difference them. c) Draw their structures. d) Speak in simple, compound and complex sentences e) learn about clauses.

Presentation 1.He is poor (simple sentence) 2.He is poor but( he is) honest (compound sentence) 3.Though he is poor, he is honest (complex sentence) Structures: 1.Simple sentence: 1 sub+1 finite verb 2.Compound sentence: 2 sub+2 finite verb (and, but,or yet,and so,not only----but also,either—or,neither----nor etc.connected with co-ordinating conjunction. 3.complex sentence: 2 sub+2 finite verb ( that, if, as, because, though, although, what, when, where, why, how, who which, whom etc.connected with sub— ordinating conjunction Clauses: A clause is a part of a longer sentence.1 subject and 1 finite verb make a clause.Clause = ½. Sentence=1.Only compound and complex sentences have clauses.Simple sentence has no clause. Example: He is poor but he is honest. p+p=1/2+1/2=compound sentence. Though he is poor,he is honest.s+p=1/2+1/2=complex sentence

STRUCTURES 1.SIMPLE SENTENCE= P 2.COMPOUND SENTENCE= P+P (AND,BUT,OR, YET ) 3.COMPLEX SENTENCE= P+S / S+P (THAT,IE,AS,BECAUSE, THOUGH ALTHOUGH WHO, WHICH, WHAT ETC---are used according to meaning of the sentence) Here P means principal clause and s means subordinate clause. Principal clause is principal/main of a sentence and it does not depend on other but subordinate clause depends on the principal clause and it alone cannot express the meaning of the sentence.
