THE HOMEFRONT

LIFE AT HOME Even at home the war affected everyone Schools in some places were closed for lack of students (children stayed home to help families) North and South experienced changes to society even outside the warzone

LIFE IN THE SOUTH Most battles in the South Destruction was severe Many Southerners lost their homes in the war Economy was terrible Without trade, South faced food shortages and lacked everyday supplies

ROLE OF WOMEN Women’s roles changed to fit the needs of war Women became: Nurses to aid the wounded in battle Clara Barton Spies (few suspected women as spies) Soldiers (disguised as men) At home, women: Kept factories and farms running Took on other jobs (teachers, office work)

DISCUSSION 1.How did the war impact children at home during the war? 2.What was the role of women prior to the war? How did this change during the Civil War? 3.Predict what other potential problems could come up on the homefront because of the war.

POLITICAL ISSUES Prisoners of war Treated awful on both sides Andersonville (Confederate POW camp) Opposition to the war Some in North opposed the war (Copperheads) Lincoln suspends habeas corpus in Union legal process that ensures a government is not illegally imprisoning someone Allows Lincoln to imprison anyone for as long as he wants

ECONOMIC ISSUES Both sides were strained on the economy Union: Created new paper money called greenbacks to help fix the economy Easy to distribute and make sure people have money Confederacy: Suffered from no trade (blockade) Had no currency (each state had own paper money) No industry to resupply soldiers

REFLECTION How can issues on the homefront impact the actual war?
