BESTUFS as a thematic network in the 5th FP... 4 years of -‘Bringing together’ experts, projects, research results and stakeholders within the theme ‘urban freight transport (UFT)’ - Connecting European and national research and establishing and maintaining a network of expertise - Identification and collection of good practices - Dissemination of good practices - Clustering of projects, activities and results 4 years where - No deep research efforts had been foreseen Facilitation & PromotionInterestVMTLRoleBESTUFSVMTL ApproachVMTL PlatformBESTUFS IIBESTUFS dissemination

BESTUFS as a thematic network in the 5th FP... 4 years of events -12 Workshops all over Europe addressing different themes -4 Conferences - Further presentations at national and European events 4 years of Best Practice results - Material collections on 7 themes integrated within 4 Best Practice Handbooks -Clustering of projects in a yearly updated clustering report 4 years of dissemination -Broad distribution of newsletters -Regularly updated BESTUFS homepage Facilitation & PromotionInterestVMTLRoleBESTUFSVMTL ApproachVMTL PlatformBESTUFS IIBESTUFS dissemination

Facilitation and Promotion or Who is interested in UFT innovation? Cities- Few experts with regard to UFT and therefore only - Few observers of trends and innovations - Low financial sources Transport operators - Open towards innovation - Expect own benefit (chances for win-win-solutions) - Other themes are prioritised (market concentration, standard software interfaces, supply-chain integration, tolls, taxation of transports, etc.) Vehicle industry - Important innovation promoters due to high competition Universities, research institutes have original interest in innovations Realisation and implementation of approaches has to be done within an integrated approach of the cities, transport operators and shippers within field tests Subsidies of EU, states, etc. play an important role Facilitation & PromotionInterestVMTLRoleBESTUFSVMTL ApproachVMTL PlatformBESTUFS IIBESTUFS dissemination

Role of Urban Freight Transport (UFT) UFT represents very often the “Last Mile“ of the transport chains UFT guarantees the goods supply of the citizens and enterprises - Transports between production plants - Carrier and parcel services - Main construction trade and interior fittings - Retail and services - Waste disposal UFT is organised and carried out by private companies while rules and conditions are determined by the cities Result: Rather low attention is paid to the UFT matters within the cities‘ overall transport and traffic planning (compared to passenger transport planning) Facilitation & PromotionInterestVMTLRoleBESTUFSVMTL ApproachVMTL PlatformBESTUFS IIBESTUFS dissemination

Increasing interest in UFT - Five reasons 1. Home shopping Consequences of an increasing number of small deliveries 2. Negative environmental effects of transport Growing awareness of the negative effects of transport and the relatively larger contribution caused by UFT 3. Attractiveness of cities Measures in the city centres improve attractiveness but may hinder the UFT 4. Access restrictions to city centres Measures have to address the access for UFT explicitly 5. High cost for the Last Mile Increasing interest in transport telematics for the optimisation of supply chains Facilitation & PromotionInterestVMTLRoleBESTUFSVMTL ApproachVMTL PlatformBESTUFS IIBESTUFS dissemination
