Standard and Essential Question CCSS.ELA-7.W.4       Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 1–3 above. CCSS.ELA-7.W.1       Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. How do we find evidence to refute the opposing claim? How do we organize a conclusion?

Please get out… Argumentative Essay Graphic Organizers Textbooks Pencil Dry Erase Board Dry Erase Marker

Prior Learning / CFU Why might my reader be confused if I don’t put a topic sentence into my introduction? What 3 things do I need when citing evidence? Why is it important to address the opposing claim?

Today We are going to finish our graphic organizers by working through the opposing claim and conclusion

Relevance Have you ever disagreed with someone and tried to tell them all the reasons why they were wrong?

Relevance You are REFUTING or disproving their CLAIM by giving REASONS and EVIDENCE. We are going to do the same thing in our writing.

I Do: Opposing Claim My Claim: Abby Sunderland is NOT TOO YOUNG to sail around the world solo Opposing Claim (OPPOSITE): Abby Sunderland is TOO YOUNG to sail around the world solo. Now I need to find EVIDENCE to refute or disprove this claim.

I Do/We Do: Opposing Claim My Claim: Abby Sunderland is NOT TOO YOUNG to sail around the world solo Opposing Claim (OPPOSITE): Abby Sunderland is TOO YOUNG to sail around the world solo. Evidence: News Article Lines 57-59 “But the family has robustly defended themselves. They’ve pointed out that Abby is a highly experienced and highly skilled sailor.”

CFU What does REFUTE mean? How will I be refuting the opposing claim in my essay?

I Do: Conclusion Your conclusion is going to SUM UP everything that you’ve discussed in your essay. You need to restate your CLAIM and REASONS in a NEW WAY. Basically, I am just rewording what I already wrote

I Do: Conclusion ORIGINAL Claim: Abby Sunderland is not too young to sail around the world alone at the age of 16. REWORDED Claim: Abby Sunderland is old enough to sail solo as a teenager.

We Do: Conclusion ORIGINAL REASONS: She has many years of experience Her family has supported her decision Other teenagers have attempted this voyage REWORDED REASONS ______________________________________

CFU/Closure Why do you think it’s important to restate your claim and reasons in a new and fresh way? How does refuting the opposing claim make your essay stronger?

You Do: Opposing Claim and Conclusion On your own work through the opposing claim and conclusion part of your graphic organizer. REMEMBER: Opposing Claim Write the opposing claim sentence Cite Evidence Quote the text Line # Media source Conclusion Reword Claim Reword Reasons
