DeLiDAQ-2D ─ a new data acquisition system for position-sensitive neutron detectors with delay-line readout F.V. Levchanovskiy, S.M. Murashkevich Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, Russia NEC’2015

DeLiDAQ-2D board for data acquisition from PSD 8-channel time-code converter (TDC-GPX), resolution 80 ps FPGA- the firmware is stored and executed : - logical operations - events selection - events filtering Histogram memory (HM), 1 Gbyte : - X-Y-TOF spectra, up to 512х512х bit words Basic mode of data acquisition : - histogram mode (on-line sorting and collection of spectra in HM) - list mode (Raw data) Build-in test generator (imitates a system operation without detector input ) The real count rate >= 10 6 events/s Standard NIM

NEC’2015 Architecture of new DAQ system

NEC’2015 DeLiDAQ-2D board

Data transfer between PC and DAQ board NEC’2015 Serial fiber-optic communication line, rate 1.25 Gbit/s Distance between DAQ electronics and PC is up to 100 m Check-up CRC-code follows every data package Repeat package transfer if an error occurs Data transfer rate through USB 2.0 port is 32 Mbyte/s. Adaptor is used for communication between DAQ board and a PC

Data transfer between PC and DAQ board : adaptor NEC’2015 FPGA1 (master for USB-controller ) : - initiates internal registers of USB-controller (CY7C68001 chip, Cypress) - realizes the data interchange protocol via optical fiber line and TLK1501 chip with with DAQ board Transceivers TLK the transmitters parallel data stream into a serial and vice versa USB- controller has 4 end points: EP2, bulk, outFIFO, 512 bytes x 2, write data to HM EP4, bulk, outFIFO, 14 bytes, command block defines a type of data interchange: - read/write to HM - read/write registers - write constant/erase HM - read status register EP6, bulk, inFIFO, 512 bytes x 2, read data from HM, read registers EP8, bulk, inFIFO, 512 bytes x 2, read “raw” data

Programmable parameters NEC’2015 All function and parameters of DeLiDAQ-2D module are programmed. Parameters for data selection and filtering from time-code converter (TDC - GPX): - Hardware delay between detector start and stop signals - The size of the time window in which all the signals of a single event - Time value of delay lines X and Y coordinates - Time value of allowable variation of the delay line X and Y coordinates Parameters for the control of the TOF neutron counters : - Delay of the time window after reactor start pulse - Time channel width - Number of time channels Parameters for the control of histogram dimension : - Maximum significant number of bits X and Y coordinate detector - The number of bits of the fields X and Y coordinates used for the histogram The parameters and commands defining the operation modes: - Command data bits that determine the mode of data collection (1D, 2D, presence of TOF and etc) - Start/Stop of data taking - Time period of frame sequence in a test mode - Reset of the registers of lost events

Software: d_DeLiDAQ2.exe NEC’2015 CyUSB.SYS (Generic USB Deviсe Driver) - driver USB controller for Windows XP/7 d_DeLiDAQ2.exe – the main program of the control unit: - program is a part of the software package SONIX+ - written in Visual C++ - used CyAPI.lib library (Cypress) - used method XferData() of the class CCyUSBEndPoint to read/write data from/to the module - the initialization parameters are stored in a common configuration file - the parameters during operation are stored in VARMAN database - executed command received from the interpreter (via VARMAN): - set operating mode (test or real detector mode, 1-D, 2-D, with/without TOF, histogramming or “raw” data (Raw1, Raw2 or Raw3)) - set delay of time window after reactor start - set the values of X- and Y-coordinates - set number and width of TOF channels - start/stop exposition - reading НМ - reading counters оf detected or lost events

NEC’2015 Software: “TEST DeLiDAQ2” The program is designed for the test of DeLiDAQ-2D module as well as for selection of delay lines and their tolerance before the experiment. The program is graphical interface for d_DeLiDAQ2.exe Use Python, Matplotlib, NumPy package Functions: - set parameters - on-line visualization of spectra in histogramming mode - analysis of "raw" data RAW1, RAW2, RAW3 - construction and visualization of histograms T, X1, X2, X1+X2, X1-X2, Y1, Y2, Y1+Y2, Y1-Y2 - read counters

TEST DeLiDAQ2 NEC’2015

Conclusion NEC’2015 The new data acquisition and accumulation system DeLiDAQ2-2D has successfully passed the tests both in a stand and REFLEX and GRAINS spectrometers of IBR-2 reactor. The authors are deeply grateful to A. Bogdzel for his useful remarks and help during equipment tests.

Thank you for your attention! NEC’2015
