Work during and after Studies – sharing best practice Hena Mookerji

Background 27 Schools Just under 4500 full-time international students Research intensive University Tier 4 compliance (visa support + data team) within the academic registry Schools are involved in compliance duties

How we get the message across Inductions Post-registration message once every term at the beginning of summer for post- graduate taught (PGT) students Post-graduate research inductions Information on payroll forms e.g entitlement to work; attach copies of visa etc.

The Careers Service Run and develop workshops with the careers service; Staff in the careers service attend/ observe workshops; Referral process for placements organised by the careers service; Support and develop service e.g. Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur

Schools Administer placements and have dedicated placement officers/ international student officers in larger schools Appoint students for ‘demonstrating’ role (PG research students) Staff awareness of Tier 4 – referral to Visa Support when in doubt Use PGR Training Programme for Tier 4 DES workshops (with careers service)

Problem areas HR administer recruitment of roles e.g. research position HR’s lack of understanding of Tier 4 DES Letter for prevention of illegal working issued as a standard letter – disparity between courses especially PGR students Do you have similar problems? How do you deal with this?

Questions?
