The Power of A Resource for Primary Teachers

The internet is an incredible resource for both teachers and students. With instant information right at our fingertips.

As a teacher you cannot be an expert on every subject. As an example lets take a year 5 Science lesson, focusing on plants and how they grow. There are many youtube videos depicting the rapid grow of plants.

According to the Australian Curriculum (ACARA) Overview and Links to Foundation - Year 10 Science In the Science Understanding strand, the Biology curriculum draws on knowledge and understanding from across the four sub-strands of Biological, Physical, Chemical, and Earth and Space sciences. Science In the Science Understanding strand, the Biology curriculum draws on knowledge and understanding from across the four sub-strands of Biological, Physical, Chemical, and Earth and Space sciences. In particular, the Biology curriculum continues to develop the key concepts introduced in the Biological Sciences sub-strand, that is, that a diverse range of living things have evolved on Earth over hundreds of millions of years, that living things are interdependent and interact with each other and their environment, and that the form and features of living things are related to the functions their systems perform. cience/biology/links-to-foundation-to-year-10

Incorporating Youtube into the classroom Get the children to drawing the ‘Bean Growth’ Watch the video of the bean growing

As another example lets take a year 6 Humanities and Social Science lesson: Focusing on “growing experience of community and the wider world to develop their understanding of the world, its systems, and students’ relationship to other people, places and systems, past and present” (ACARA Learning 3 – 6) Sometimes in the classroom information from peers is easier for children learn from. This video also caters to children with visual difficulties by describing the scenes.

ACARA - Overview The Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum continues to draw on students’ growing experience of community and the wider world to develop their understanding of the world, its systems, and students’ relationship to other people, places and systems, past and present. Methodical investigation using observations and concrete information sources offers opportunities to develop skills of inferring, prediction, reflection and generalisation, which enhance conceptual development. verview/3-6

As you can see there are a range of different uses for Youtube videos in the classroom. There are many opportunities to be found on Youtube.
