University of East London Elizabeth Attree Research Methods 1 Design and analysis Practicals

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Semester A practicals will focus on: Introducing you to experimental research Designing & running experiments Statistical analysis Writing experimental reports Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Allocation to practical group You have been allocated to ONE practical group and you are required to attend that group ONLY. Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Practical briefings At the start of each practical session you will receive a briefing about the practical You will also receive additional debriefing information after the data have been collected Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree You will be offered 3 practicals in Semester A and 3 practicals in Semester B. A total of 6 practical reports can be submitted, the best 4 marks (40% and above) count as your coursework mark Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Writing the report: The practical booklet contains information about how to write a lab report. It also a check list for you to complete before you submit your work Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Practical 1 HAND IN TO HELP DESK BY 30 OCTOBER 2008 (19.30) Practical 2 HAND IN TO HELP DESK BY 4 DECEMBER 2008 (19.30) Practical 3 HAND IN TO HELP DESK BY 20 JANUARY 2009 (17.00) N.B. It is your responsibility to check: 1.That your student name is correct on the front sheet 2.That you check for your receipt – which is sent to you a couple of days after submitting your work Research Methods 1: Semester A deadlines

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Learning Outcomes By the end of this practical, and with additional readings, you should be able to: Understand the important theoretical aspects of the experiment Critically evaluate the methodology used Highlight design problems and suggest relevant improvements Analyse the data using an appropriate statistical test Suggest future research on this topic, and explain how such ideas are relevant. Write up the experiment in the appropriate scientific format Research Methods 1: Practical 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree General background In the 1890s, the French psychologist Alfred Binet was employed by the French Government to devise tests that would identify school children with special needs. The tests that he devised were the forerunners of psychometric assessments deemed to measure intellectual functioning in the form of an intelligence quotient (IQ). Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree For example, the Wechsler Intelligence Scales measure ‘intellectual functioning’ through a combination of two scales: a performance scale and a verbal scale = a Full Scale IQ. Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree The performance scale measures non-verbal problem solving, the ability to think quickly in visual images and the ability to quickly interpret visual materials. The verbal scale involves using verbal problem solving, using verbal comprehension and skills to solve problems. Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree By convention, overall IQ scores are usually converted to a scale in which the mean is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. (The standard deviation is a measure of the variability of the distribution of scores.) Approximately 95% of the population has scores within two standard deviations of the mean, i.e. between 70 and 130 Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Research Methods 1 Your IQ will not be measured during this practical. This practical will investigate beliefs about IQ scores.

University of East London IQ estimation By comparison with the national average I.Q. score of 100, what do you estimate your I.Q. would be, if you took one of the standard, objective tests? By comparison with the national average I.Q. score of 100, what do you estimate your mother’s I.Q. would be, if she took one of the standard, objective tests? By comparison with the national average I.Q. score of 100, what do you estimate your father’s I.Q. would be, if he took one of the standard, objective tests? UEL Learning and Teaching Conference 2006

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Your task: On a piece of paper please write down 1.Your age 2.Male or female 3.An estimate of your own IQ 4.An estimate of your Mother’s IQ 5.An estimate of your Father’s IQ Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree Next week: Check UELPlus Check time & venue as we will be in a computer lab. You will be debriefed You will receive a copy of the data set for the whole group You will need to bring your Dancey & Reidy textbook – for the SPSS guide on inputting data. Research Methods 1
