Grammar 2 The Second Semester Time Expressions Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

Objectives of the Session Students are expected to: -Use time expressions correctly. -Form correct structures which include accurate time expressions. -Distinguish between the meanings of some time expressions.

In, on and at A- Consider the use of ‘in’ in the following examples. 1- I was born in Years 2- He will end his project in May. Months 3- In summer, the problem of power shortage will be more serious. Seasons 4- The meeting is going to be held in the morning/ afternoon/ evening. Parts of the day B- Consider the use of ‘on’ in the following examples. 5- I was born on the 10 th of October. Days of the week 6- They will organize a nice party on Christmas Day/ my birthday. Special days

C- Consider the use of ‘at’ in the following examples. 1- The film ended at 4.00/ midday/ midnight. Times of the day 2- They often have a nice time at weekend. The weekend 3- They just visit their relatives at Christmas/Easter/AL Adha Eid. Holiday periods 4- You should have a light meal at breakfast/lunch/dinner. Meals 5- We always have a nice chat at night. Part of the day: ‘night’

During or For During answers the question ‘when’. When didn’t you feel nervous? I didn’t feel nervous during the performance. For answers the question ‘How long?’. How long did the performance last? It lasted for forty-five minutes. Note the difference between by and until. We’ll be there by = on or before I’ll be away until Friday. = up to

In time or on time 1- The plane took off exactly on time. 2- I have never been late. I am always on time. On time means at the right time. 3- We arrived in time to have a meal before the plane left. 4- The meeting begins at 2.30 p.m. and I arrived at 2.00 p.m. So I was in time. In time means with enough time to do something.

Once and one day 1- Once I had a terrifying experience. 2- Once I owned a motorbike. Once means ‘at one time in my life’. It only refers to the past. 3- One day I was walking through the town and I met Ali who was carrying a big bag. 4- One day I’ll be famous. One day can refer to the past or the future.

In the end/ at the end/ at last 1- At the end of the meeting, they shake hands and said goodbye. 2- At the end of the film we all cried. At the end refers to a point in time. 3- We waited for Tim for ages, and in the end we left. 4- The car broke down and they tried to fix it several times, but in the end they decided to take a taxi. In the end means ‘after a lot of time’ or ‘eventually’. 5- At last we can be together. 6- At last the hostages were released. 7- At last, we have gotten something to eat. At last makes a comment that we are pleased a long wait has ended.
