Presentation transcript:

In many towns and cities across the UK you will find Muslim women wearing the hijab or veil. New police uniform for Muslim women officers Out shopping in your community, if you were surrounded by veiled women, would this make you feel uncomfortable?

Tony Blair argues that “The face veil is a mark of separation which makes people feel uncomfortable” Do you agree or disagree?

Jack Straw, a leading British politician, argues that women wearing the face veil harms race relations. Do you agree or disagree? A British politician has said that wearing the veil is a backward step for equal rights for women

A Head Teacher in England states, “ In my school, Muslim sixth formers, who have chosen to wear the hijab, are far from being regarded as ‘retiring violets‘, which is an impression given in the media, they are in fact the feistiest students in the sixth form” “the reason we wear the veil is that we see it as a liberating garment. It frees women from being seen as sexual objects”.

Should Britain follow France’s lead and ban the wearing of the full face veil?

Your task…. Investigate this question….. Should Britain follow France’s lead and ban the wearing of the full face veil? What to do: Produce a ‘presentation’ to explore the contrasting arguments concerning wearing of the veil in British and French society. You will produce the presentation in pairs, then join with two other pairs to decide the ‘best’. This ‘best’ presentation must then be edited to contain at least one statement from the 2 other original presentations (and labelled… e.g. Sarah and Tom thought that……) Use web2tools (suggestions on Moodle) to present your views e.g. VoiceThread, animoto etc….

Your task…. Investigate this question….. Should Britain follow France’s lead and ban the wearing of the full face veil? Success Criteria: Explore contrasting arguments concerning wearing of the veil in British and French society. Highlight contrasting Islamic and Secular arguments together with supporting evidence. Look at the evidence provided (feminist views for and against the Hijab) Always provide supporting evidence when illustrating your views. You must work as a team to analyse and evaluate the material into arguments for and against with supporting evidence/reasons. Make sure that you give consideration to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

Should Britain follow France’s lead and ban the wearing of the full face veil? There are two video clips on moodle that can help provide information: Clip 1 – Contrasting Muslim views in Britain – Customs Traditions and Feminism Opinions about wearing of the veil in a British context. |Remember, when you watch the film give consideration to the key lesson question.
