Vocabulary Development Focus on Context Clues & Prefixes “The Most Dangerous Game”

Special Focus: Prefixes Prefix: a letter or group of letters attached to the beginning of a word that partly indicates its meaning. BE CAREFUL! Just because a word begins with the same letters as a common prefix does NOT mean it IS a prefix. These words use the prefix “re-,” which means “back”: recall- to call back return- to give back These words do NOT have prefixes. The “re-” does not mean “back” and is not added onto another word. real- not fake, authentic read- to recognize and interpret words in meaningful ways reap- to harvest or gather

Receding “The receding car looked like an ant on the horizon.” Receding- (v. /adj.)- becoming more distant “Re-” = back; againreturn; redo

Disarming The con-man’s disarming smile deceived the old woman, and she forked over her life-savings. Disarming- (adj)- removing or lessening suspicions or fears; putting at ease “Dis-” = no, not, away, apartdishonest; disapprove

Prolonged The tie prolonged the game, pushing it into overtime. Prolonged- (v /adj.)- extended “Pro-” = forward; before; overproactive proclaim promotion

Imprudent It is imprudent to sleep in class because you miss important information. Imprudent- (adj)-unwise “Im-” = no, not improper immodest

Surmounted I surmounted my fear of heights by going skydiving. Surmounted-(v)-overcame “Sur-” = over, abovesurface surcharge

Unruffled Despite the customer’s nasty comments, the employee managed to remain unruffled. Unruffled-(adj)- calm, not disturbed “Un-” = not; reverse ofunlikely unattractive

Invariably Jim invariably turned in homework late, so his teacher was shocked the day he turned in the essay on time. Invariably-(adv)-always; without changing “In-” = no, notinaccurate inadequate
