Topic Sentence Elements in an Analytical Paragraph

Topic Sentence: Purpose Topic sentences indicate what subject your paragraph will focus on and make an argument about that topic. In an analytical essay, topic sentences typically follow the format below: Topic (subject of your paragraph) + analytical verb + argument (meaning)

Topic Sentence Example The final frame in Rear Window demonstrates Lisa's ultimate resistance to male dominance. topic argument verb

Example 2 (not a topic sentence) The men and women wear clothing that is typical of the 1950s era. [This sentence makes no argument; it merely states a fact. See the difference?]
