In Greek, verbs have a different: person voice meaning tense mood

The moods in Greek are: indicative: fact or statement subjunctive: possibility optative: more remote in likelihood or time than the subjunctive

The subjunctive is simple Only present & aorist Lengthened versions of the indicative form Used in a few constructions No augment

The optative is also super simple Only present & aorist (& future…) Distinctive diphthong: oi, ai, ei Used in historic sequence: imp & aor No augment

e.g. I go to the shop to buy caterpillar cake main verb = present = primary verb of purpose clause in subjunctive I went to the shop to buy caterpillar cake main verb = aorist = historic verb of purpose clause in optative

but even with historic tenses, Greek often uses the subjunctive…
