 Exchange – whenever people interact in an effort to receive a reward or return for their actions  Reciprocity is the basis of exchange – if you do something for someone, that person owes you something in return  Exchange Theory says that people are motivated by self- interest in their interactions with other people

 Competition – occurs when two or more people or groups oppose each other to achieve a goal that only one can attain  Common in Western societies  Cornerstone of the Capitalist & Democratic systems  Usually positive as long as it follows accepted rules of conduct  Conflict – the deliberate attempt to control a person by force, to oppose someone, or to harm another person  Few rules of accepted conduct & any rules are often ignored  Wars, disagreements within groups, legal disputes, clashes over ideology  Can begin as competition  Can lead to social change by bringing problems to the forefront

 Cooperation – occurs when two or more people or groups work together to achieve a goal that will benefit more than one person  Gets things done – no group can achieve its goals without cooperation from its members  Often used with other forms of interaction  Used with competition to motivate individual members to work harder  Eg: Individuals compete for a position on a team

 Accommodation – a state of balance between cooperation & conflict  Compromise – when two parties at odds each give up something to come to a mutual agreement  Truce – temporarily brings a halt to the competition or conflict until a compromise can be reached  Mediation – calling a third party who acts as adviser & counselor to guide the two parties to an agreement  Arbitration – a third party makes a decision that is binding on both parties
