Everyday Mathematics Grade 5 Lesson 2.6 – Chance Events Objectives: To review vocabulary associated with chance events and to introduce the Probability Meter

Math Message Complete workbook page 43 Describe the chances using decimals, fractions and percent names. What vocabulary might you use? When might probability be either certain or impossible?

Student reference book page 402 Probability meter. Probability can be described using decimals, fractions, percents and a variety of words and phrases. Make a list of these words and phrases in your ISN’s.

Find the following on the meter. There is 1% chance that a person’s house will catch on fire during the next year. There is 2/3 chance that an adult knows how to swim. Birth records show that 51% of children are boys and 49% of children are girls. How do YOU think the probability of these events was obtained?

Statistician A statistician estimates probability using surveys (of many people), telephone records, fire reports, etc.

Thumbtacks If I drop a thumbtack, it will either land with the point up, or the point down. Is the thumbtack MORE LIKELY to land with the point up or the point down? Record your guesses at the top of page 44 in your student workbook. Then, while reading the directions carefully, perform the experiment. (obtain thumbtacks from your teacher).

Thumbtacks pt.2 In order to determine a more accurate probability for our experiment, we need to add the numbers from each group together. Add each groups numbers in total and then divide them by the number of groups there were. For example, if there were 12 sets of data, (1,200 thumbtacks) and 491 of those landed point down,, then you would divide 491 by 1200 and round the result to the nearest hundredth. (.41) meaning.41 or 41/100 or 41% probability that the tack will land point down.
